AC Running But Not Cooling? Here's What to Check First
When your AC runs nonstop but the house won’t cool down, work through five quick checks before you pick up the phone: swap a dirty air filter, confirm the thermostat is on COOL with the fan set to AUTO, look for a tripped breaker at the panel, check whether the indoor coil or refrigerant line has ice on it, and hose off a dirt-caked outdoor condenser. Those five items cover a big share of the “running but not cooling” calls we get. If everything checks out and the air from the vents still isn’t cold, you’re likely looking at a refrigerant or compressor problem — and that part is pro territory.
Here’s how to run through each step, and how to know when to stop and call us.
What’s the fastest thing to check?
The air filter. Pull it out and hold it up to a light. Can’t see light through it? That’s your problem, or at least a big part of it. A choked filter strangles airflow, so the system moves less air across the cold coil and the house warms up even though the unit never stops running. Put in a fresh filter, and give the system a few hours to catch up.
The thermostat. It sounds obvious, but we find this one all the time. Make sure the mode is COOL, not HEAT or OFF, and the fan is on AUTO rather than ON. With the fan set to ON, the blower runs between cooling cycles and pushes room-temperature air through the vents, which feels like the AC “isn’t cooling.” Also check the batteries if your thermostat uses them — a dying thermostat does strange things.
Why would the breaker matter if the AC is running?
Because your air conditioner is really two machines: the indoor blower and the outdoor condenser, and they’re often on separate breakers. If the outdoor unit’s breaker trips, the blower keeps pushing air — just not cold air. Walk outside and listen. If the fan on the outdoor unit isn’t spinning while the indoor system runs, check your electrical panel for a tripped breaker.
One important rule: reset a tripped breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off and call us. Breakers trip for a reason, and repeatedly forcing power into a struggling compressor can turn a repair into a replacement.
What does ice on my AC mean?
Pop the panel near your indoor unit or look at the copper line running to the outdoor unit. If you see frost or a block of ice, your evaporator coil has frozen — usually from weak airflow or low refrigerant. An iced coil can’t absorb heat, so the AC runs and runs while the house gets warmer.
Shut the cooling off, switch the fan to ON to thaw the coil, and replace the filter while you wait. If ice comes back after a clean filter and open vents, refrigerant is the likely suspect, and that means a service call. How does a dirty outdoor unit stop the cooling?
Your outdoor condenser’s job is to dump the heat collected from inside your house. If its coil is packed with cottonwood fluff, grass clippings, and dust — and by mid-June around here, plenty are — it can’t shed that heat, and cooling capacity drops hard.
Kill power at the outdoor disconnect, then gently rinse the coil fins from the outside with a garden hose. No pressure washer; the fins bend easily. Clear leaves and debris from around the cabinet and keep shrubs trimmed back a couple of feet. You’d be surprised how much cooling a clean coil buys back.
When is it a refrigerant or compressor problem?
If the filter is fresh, the thermostat is right, both units are powered, nothing is frozen, and the condenser is clean — but the air at the vents still isn’t meaningfully colder than room air — the remaining suspects are refrigerant charge and the compressor itself. Warm air at the vents, ice that keeps returning, hissing sounds, or an outdoor unit that hums without starting all point this direction.
This is where DIY ends, and not just because the work is technical. Handling refrigerant legally requires EPA certification, and diagnosing charge takes gauges and training. There’s a practical reason too: refrigerant isn’t fuel, and a system never “uses it up.” Low refrigerant always means a leak somewhere, and the right fix is finding and repairing the leak, not paying for a top-off every summer.
Does Missouri humidity make this worse?
It does. Air conditioners in our area do double duty — cooling the air and wringing moisture out of it. A system that’s low on refrigerant or starved for airflow loses its dehumidifying power first, which is why a struggling AC makes the house feel sticky and clammy even when the thermostat reading looks close.
