Sump Pump Maintenance: How to Keep Your Basement Dry Before the Next Storm

If you own a sump pump, test it every three to four months by pouring a bucket of water into the pit and watching the pump kick on, pump the pit down, and shut off. While you’re down there, check that the float moves freely, the check valve is holding, the discharge line is clear, and the battery backup (if you have one) is charged. Most pumps last somewhere in the range of 7 to 10 years, so if yours is getting up there, plan the replacement before it fails — not after.

Why do St. Louis-area basements depend on sump pumps so much?

Spring in St. Charles and St. Louis Counties means rounds of heavy rain, sometimes several inches in a day. Our clay-heavy soil doesn’t drain fast, so groundwater pushes against foundations and finds its way into the sump pit. That little pump in the corner is often the only thing standing between a storm and a soaked basement.

How do I test my sump pump the right way?

Grab a five-gallon bucket, fill it with water, and pour it slowly into the sump pit. Here’s what should happen:

  1. The float rises with the water. As the pit fills, the float switch lifts.
  2. The pump kicks on before the pit overflows. You should hear the motor start and see the water level drop quickly.
  3. The pump shuts off on its own. Once the water is pumped down, the float drops and the motor stops.

If the pump doesn’t start, check that it’s plugged in and the breaker or GFCI hasn’t tripped. If it hums but doesn’t move water, the impeller may be jammed with debris. If it runs but the pit refills right away without new water coming in, your check valve is probably the culprit — more on that below.

Do this test a few times a year, and always do it in early spring before the storm systems start rolling through.

What should I check besides the pump itself?

The float switch. This is the part that tells the pump when to run, and it’s the most common failure point we see. Make sure it moves up and down freely and isn’t hung up on the pit wall, the power cord, or debris. A tethered float in a narrow pit is especially prone to snagging.

The check valve. This one-way valve sits on the discharge pipe and keeps pumped water from draining back into the pit. When it fails, the pump re-pumps the same water on a loop, which wears the motor out early. If you hear the pump cycling on and off constantly, or you hear water rushing back down the pipe after each cycle, the check valve needs attention.

The discharge line. Follow the pipe outside. The outlet should be clear of mud, mulch, and landscaping, and it should dump water well away from the foundation. In late winter, make sure the line isn’t still frozen or blocked.

The pit itself. Scoop out any gravel, silt, or debris that could get sucked into the impeller. A little housekeeping here prevents a lot of jams.

Signs of hidden water problems. If your pump runs constantly even in dry weather, you may have more water moving under your slab than you think — sometimes it’s groundwater, sometimes it’s a leaking supply line. Do I need a battery backup system?

Think about the last big thunderstorm that knocked your power out. That’s the exact moment your sump pump needed to run hardest, and without a backup, it couldn’t. This is the gap a battery backup pump fills: it takes over automatically when the power drops or the primary pump fails.

If your basement is finished, or you’d lose anything of value to a few inches of water, a battery backup isn’t a luxury. It’s part of a complete system. Test it the same way you test the primary — unplug the main pump, pour water in, and confirm the backup fires. Check the battery’s charge indicator regularly, and know that backup batteries wear out and need replacement every few years.

When should I replace my sump pump instead of repairing it?

Most residential sump pumps give you roughly 7 to 10 years of service, though a pump that cycles constantly can wear out faster. We recommend replacing on your schedule rather than the storm’s schedule if you notice:

  • The pump is past that age range and you don’t know its history
  • It’s cycling far more than it used to
  • The motor sounds rough — grinding, rattling, or excessive vibration
  • Visible rust on the housing or repeated tripped breakers
  • It has failed you even once during a heavy rain
