Tankless vs. Tank Water Heaters: An Honest Comparison

Here’s the short version: a tank water heater wins on lower upfront cost and simple installation, while a tankless wins on endless hot water, longer lifespan, lower operating cost, and space savings — but usually costs more to install, especially as a retrofit. Neither is “better.” The right choice depends on your household’s hot water habits, your home’s gas and venting setup, and how long you plan to stay. How Do the Two Actually Work?

A tank heater keeps 40 to 50-plus gallons hot around the clock, reheating it as it cools whether you use any or not. That standby reheating is wasted energy, but the design is simple, proven, and cheap to build.

A tankless heater (also called on-demand) heats water only when a tap opens. Water races through a powerful heat exchanger and comes out hot on the fly. Nothing is stored, so nothing sits there losing heat all day.

That one design difference drives almost every tradeoff below.

Which Costs Less — Upfront and Over Time?

The honest answer has two halves.

Upfront, the tank wins. The equipment itself costs less, and if you’re swapping a tank for a tank, the connections are already there. Tankless equipment costs more, and retrofitting often adds gas line and venting work (more on that below). We quote both upfront so you’re comparing real numbers, not brochure numbers — and financing is available if you’d rather spread it out.

Over time, the tankless usually wins. No standby losses means less fuel burned for the same hot water. And lifespan changes the long-game math: a tankless can serve around twenty years with maintenance, while tanks typically need replacement in the 8-to-12-year window. Over two decades you might buy one tankless unit or two tanks.

Whether the operating savings justify the upfront gap depends on how much hot water your household uses and how long you’ll own the home. A family of five doing laundry daily gets more out of tankless efficiency than a single person in a condo. We’ll do that math with you honestly.

What About Running Out of Hot Water?

This is where tankless earns its reputation. Because it heats on demand, it never runs out. Back-to-back showers, a soaking tub, laundry running at the same time — as long as you don’t exceed the unit’s flow rate, hot water just keeps coming.

A tank has a hard ceiling: whatever’s in the tank, plus a slow recovery. If you’ve ever drawn the third shower on a winter morning, you know exactly what that ceiling feels like.

The tankless caveat is flow rate. Every unit has a gallons-per-minute limit, and Missouri’s cold winter groundwater lowers real-world output because the unit has to raise the temperature further. Sizing the unit to your simultaneous demand — not just your total demand — is the difference between loving tankless and cursing it.

How Much Space Does Each Take Up?

A tank claims a chunk of floor — a cylinder plus clearance, often in a utility closet or a corner of the basement you’d happily use for something else. A tankless unit mounts on the wall, roughly the size of a carry-on suitcase, and frees that floor space entirely. In tight mechanical rooms and smaller homes, this alone tips some decisions.

What Makes a Tankless Retrofit More Involved?

This is the part sales pitches skip, so we won’t.

Gas line capacity. A tankless unit fires much harder than a tank — it’s making all its heat in the moment instead of slowly all day. Many homes’ existing gas lines were sized for the old tank and can’t feed a tankless at full burn. Upsizing the line or running a new one is common retrofit work.

Venting. Tankless units can’t use the old metal flue. They vent through dedicated stainless or PVC piping, usually out a side wall, and that means new penetrations and materials.

Condensate and electrical. Condensing tankless models need a drain for condensate, and every tankless needs an electrical connection for its controls.

None of this is a dealbreaker — it’s just real cost that belongs in the quote from day one. A house that already has the gas capacity and a friendly vent path retrofits cheaply; a house that has neither pays more to make the switch. So Who Should Pick Which?

A tank makes sense if you want the lowest upfront cost, your current setup is tank-ready, your household’s hot water needs are modest, or you may move within a few years and won’t be around to collect the long-term savings.

Tankless makes sense if your household regularly outruns the tank, you’re staying put long enough for efficiency and lifespan to pay you back, you want the floor space, or you’re building new or remodeling — when the gas and venting can be designed in rather than retrofitted.

One myth to bury: tankless does not mean instant hot water at the faucet. The water still has to travel your pipes. “Endless” is the promise, not “immediate.”

No — that's a common mix-up. Tankless means unlimited hot water, not instant. The water still has to travel from the unit to your faucet, same as with a tank. If you want faster hot water at distant fixtures, that's solved with a recirculation setup, not by going tankless.

Can a tankless unit keep up with two showers at once?

A properly sized one can. Tankless units are rated by flow (gallons per minute), and sizing accounts for how many fixtures you run simultaneously and how cold the incoming water gets in winter. Undersizing is the usual cause of complaints, which is why the sizing conversation matters.

Do tankless water heaters work during a power outage?

Gas tankless units still need electricity for their controls and ignition, so no — they stop during an outage. A gas tank heater with a standing pilot keeps making hot water with the power out. It's a small but real difference.

Do tankless water heaters need maintenance?

Yes — an annual descaling flush, especially in a hard-water area like ours. It keeps the heat exchanger clear and protects the long lifespan you paid for. Skipping it is the fastest way to lose the tankless advantage.
