Why Is My AC Frozen? What an Iced-Up Coil Is Telling You

Your AC freezes for one of two root reasons: not enough warm air is moving across the indoor coil, or the system is low on refrigerant. Either one drops the coil’s temperature below freezing, and the moisture it pulls from your air turns to ice instead of draining away. First aid is simple — turn the cooling OFF, set the fan to ON, and let the ice melt before you do anything else. What you should never do is keep running it frozen, because that’s how compressors die.

How does ice form on an air conditioner in the middle of summer?

It seems backwards — the hotter it gets outside, the more likely your AC ices up. Here’s the mechanics in plain terms. The evaporator coil inside your ductwork is filled with refrigerant that gets very cold as it absorbs heat from the air blowing past it. That constant stream of warm household air is what keeps the coil above freezing.

Take away the warm airflow, and the coil temperature crashes. Humidity condensing on the coil freezes instead of dripping into the drain pan. The first layer of ice blocks even more airflow, which makes the coil colder, which builds more ice. It snowballs — literally — until the coil is a solid block and almost no air moves through your vents at all.

Low refrigerant gets you to the same place by a different road: with less refrigerant in the system, the pressure inside the coil drops, and lower pressure means lower temperature. The coil runs below freezing even with perfect airflow.

Is it an airflow problem or a refrigerant problem?

Start with airflow, because those causes are ones you can fix yourself today:

  • The filter. A packed filter is the number-one coil killer we find. If it’s gray and fuzzy, there’s your answer.
  • Closed or blocked vents. Supply registers shut in unused rooms, furniture parked over returns, curtains draped across vents — all of it chokes the air the coil needs.
  • A dirty evaporator coil. Years of dust on the coil surface acts like a blanket, insulating it from the airflow. This one needs a professional cleaning.
  • A weak or failing blower. If the fan motor is dying, or the blower wheel is caked with grime, the system can’t move enough air no matter how clean everything else is. Blower problems live inside your air handler, and they tend to announce themselves with humming, squealing, or noticeably weak airflow at the vents.

If the filter is clean, every vent is open, and the system still ices up — especially if it re-freezes within a day or two of thawing — refrigerant is the prime suspect. And since refrigerant doesn’t get consumed, a low charge means a leak that needs to be found and fixed, not just refilled. That diagnosis requires gauges, a leak search, and EPA certification, so it’s a call-us situation.

What’s the right way to thaw a frozen AC?

Follow this order:

  1. Switch the thermostat mode to OFF. This stops the refrigerant cycle so the coil quits making ice.
  2. Set the fan to ON. The blower now pushes room-temperature air across the coil, melting the ice from the inside out. This is faster and far safer than any shortcut.
  3. Change the filter while you wait. If a dirty filter caused the freeze, a new one may be the whole fix.
  4. Watch the condensate drain. A big thaw produces a lot of water fast. Check that the drain pan is keeping up and lay towels around the unit if you’re not sure.
  5. Wait for a full thaw before restarting. Depending on how much ice built up, that’s a few hours to a full day. Restarting with ice still on the coil just starts the cycle over.

Once it’s fully thawed, turn cooling back on and pay attention over the next 24 to 48 hours. If it stays ice-free, a clogged filter or blocked vents were probably your cause. If frost creeps back, stop running it and schedule service.

Why does running a frozen AC kill the compressor?

This is the part we most want homeowners to hear, because the compressor is the single most expensive component in your air conditioner — replacing one can cost enough that a new system starts making more sense.

When the evaporator coil is buried in ice, the refrigerant flowing through it can’t absorb heat, so it never fully boils into a vapor. Liquid refrigerant then travels back down the line to the compressor. Compressors are built to squeeze vapor; liquid doesn’t compress. Each slug of liquid that reaches the compressor hammers its valves and internal parts — techs call it “slugging” — and it can also wash the oil out of the compressor, so the thing grinds itself down even between hits.

The system will often keep running while all this happens, which is what makes it dangerous. It sounds like it’s working. It’s actually eating itself. A frozen coil caught early is often a cheap fix; a frozen coil ignored for a week can total the outdoor unit.
